What a haul!!!
We had a great Christmas, hope you did too!!!
We woke up Christmas morning and Mum let us open our presents right away.
Gracie and I both got one of those pawsome Nina Ottosson Dog Fighters. We can't wait to try it out (we promise to video tape too :)
Gracie got a new EzyDog Element Coat for our hikes, since I already had one and she needed a coat too.
Mum made us some pawsome homemade Sweet Potato chews and bagged them up for treats, and we got a big box of Honest Kitchen dehydrated raw food. Dog is it yummy!!! Oh and we got our favorite chew - Deer Antlers!!!
And when Mum picked up some raw food for all four of us last week (without even looking in web directories), she got some of those nummy raw chicken necks too, I can't wait to sink my teeth into those!!!
Hope all you pups got everything you wanted for Christmas!!! We're pretty tired from all the hard work with the Giveaway and stuffs (and there's still lots to do, too!). Hoping to catch up with everyone's blog after New Years!!!

Was just a little sore last week...
Weekend before last, during all the Howliday Giveaway stuff...I got a little sore. Mum wasn't sure what was going on with me, but I was super hunchy for several days, and the muscles around my tummy were very tight, and I really didn't want to get my zoomies on.
So Mum set up an appointment last week to see my soft tissue specialist. And she also set up an appointment to pick up some raw food for me, Gracie and Wolfie and Wiggy...more on that later in the week.
My soft tissue specialist watched me walk (and wouldn't you know it I was a little better by the time we got to her house). Then she pushed on me in my abdomen and iliopsoas areas. After she worked on me for a while, she thought that I had jammed my femer (that' my back leg) sometime recently, and that it made my iliopsoas super tight. So glad Mum didn't have to look up info about arthritis, fur sure!
She released those muscles and stretched out my back leg. And dog, did I feel better! After a day or so of forced rest, I was back to my old self. Yeah!!! Just in time to make that Holiday video we posted end of last week.

Howliday Howliday Contributor Spotlight - Inside of a Dog
The publishers of the recently released book "Inside of a Dog" written by Alexandra Horowitz sent us a copy of the book as a contribution for my Howliday Giveway.
Alexandra, who earned her PhD in Cognitive Science at the University of California at San Diego, and has studied the cognition of humans, rhinoceros, bonobos, and dogs, teaches psychology at Barnard College, Columbia University. For seventeen years she shared her home with an unwitting research subject, Pumpernickel, a wonderful mixed breed.
The publishers were also super kind to send us a copy to read as well! And we've really been enjoying it. You know how much Mum would just love to get into my head, BOL!!!
Mum's always been a pretty perceptive sort...especially when it comes to me. She had to, being her first dog, I gave her a lot to learn. But she is picking up some tips from the book to understand me just a little more, and Gracie especially! Here's a little video about the book....
Big thanks to Alexandra for writing "Inside of a Dog", and for her publisher to provide us with a copy to review (which we'll do in full when we finish the book), and the contribution to Johann's Howling Howliday Giveaway.

I got it, I got it!!! Finally!!!
Since I was just a wee pup, I've been really good at going out and targeting away from Mum. She taught me that trick very early as part of my agility training.
But get me to go get something, and bring it back to her, (other than my soccer ball in the backyard) and put it in a box...and I was stumped! Mum's been working with me to help me understand the behavior of (what I call) 'go get it' and 'put' for about a year now. And guess what! I did it this past week! Finally!
Mum was so excited she had to get it on video, even though we did it when it was dark outside (hence the poor quality of the video). But you'll get the idea.
So how did we do it? Mum thought...for me to be that excited about carrying something around in my mouth it had to be my most treasured toy. So we worked with this toy, which is actually Wiggy's little furry toy that you can stuff with catnip. I love this toy, and if I can get it from Wiggy, I carry it around with me all day.
Mum knew whatever she threw would have to be super high value, so she threw the furry little one, and then ran the other direction, with me right behind. Great first step. Then she put out a little box (the one she wanted me to put it in), threw the toy and had me bring it back to her next to the box. I like to hop into boxes so she knew I would be interested in the box...and voila! I dropped it right in.
Next step is to work on me fetching and putting other items, but we are so happy I finally got it, and Mum finally figured out how to help me learn it.

My letter to Santa!
Every year about this time, I like to republish my letter to Santa, that I wrote back in 2007. It's my hope for Christmas every year, hope you enjoy!
Dear Santa,
I wanted to write you to tell you, you see,
That Gracie and I are grateful pups, she and me.
We love our life, friends and kitty bros,
We consider them part of our pack, and so,
What do I ask you for Christmas this year?
Well, I have a list that's near and dear.
I'd like for all pups needing a home,
To find a family and not need to roam.
I wish for all those scared, cold and hungry,
To be safe, warm and have a nice full tummy.
My hope is for all pets with no family,
To have one of their own, like me, finally.
For those afraid of some of us pups,
I'd like them to learn and shed their prejudice,
Realize that when they label us bad,
It's not always us, and it's very sad.
Help folks realize that breed doesn't matter,
It's the people that raise them, not all the chatter.
Help all the children to learn how to be,
Aware of how to love us, it's really key,
For great friendships with us all of their lives,
They need to understand us, so together we'll thrive.
Help their parents teach them how and to know,
The best ways to be with us, as we both grow.
And to those that keep way too many of us,
Let them know they aren't helping, they need to adjust.
They're making things worse, that's all they're doing,
They continue and continue, their constant pursuing.
We get hungry, angry, sick and can't thrive,
In conditions where we barely survive.
Watch over the pups who help humans each day,
That guide, search and rescue and calm those at bay.
The work that they do is very admired,
They save lives and help with skills they've acquired.
Please give them a special treat in their stocking,
And send them some love when you come a knocking.
For pups that are sick, please help them get well,
We'd be lost without them, we're under their spell.
And if they are old and it's time to go,
Help them make the transition, don't make it slow.
And help those who have lost their very best friend,
Comfort them and share, they'll see them again.
Can you tell folks who are way too mean,
That hurt us, scare us, and keep us too lean,
That they need some help to understand,
We can be their best friend, always at hand.
We'll love, admire and be more than expected,
If only we're loved and highly respected.
Another request that we have for rover,
Is to stop those who breed us over and over.
It's cruel and sad for pups to live that way,
They rarely get care and can never play.
We want to end horrific places like this,
Where only a fat wallet concern exists.
Help people understand, that whenever, and if
Their pup is bad, and starts getting in a riff,
That the pup needs a job, just like all of them,
To be the best they can be, a shining gem.
Training and working is what helps us behave,
It stimulates our mind, it's what we crave.
Please help those who think fighting us is fun,
It's heartless, horrible and something to shun.
While robbing us all of a wonderful life,
The pain and cruelty cuts like a knife.
Share info with all, tall and small,
We're pets to be loved, not to brawl.
I ask that you pay particular attention,
Give a pat on the back and a special mention,
To all the folks who rescue and shelter,
They care and feed and find us an adopter,
Over and over, they never think twice,
They give so much, to be very precise.
That's all I ask for my Christmas gift,
For you to bring these on your evening shift.
Thanks, Santa for listening, it's wonderful to know,
That you grant all our wishes and continue to bestow.
We wish you and everyone a great holiday,
With peace and love - it's the only way.
Loves and licks,
Johann
Dear Santa,
I wanted to write you to tell you, you see,
That Gracie and I are grateful pups, she and me.

Howling Howliday Contributor Spotlight - EcoSMART!
If you follow my Raise A Green Dog blog, you may remember that back in July we gave away a pawsome EcoSMART product bundle to some lucky winner.
So when we were getting the word out to our friends to see if they wanted to donate to Johann's Howling Howliday Giveaway, the nice folks at EcoSMART jumped at the chance to make a contribution.
Over the summer we used their Ant and Roach Killer in our downstairs bath. For some privacy, that's where Wiggy (my kittie bro) eats his dinner, because some other 'not to be named' kittie bro likes to steal Wiggy's food.
So we were very careful about what products we would use in there since we're green and since it's where Wiggy eats. We were very happy to receive EcoSMART's organic insecticide to use in there because it's made up of very safe ingredients, like essential oils and the like. And it really kept the ants out of Wiggy food :)
Some lucky winning pup is going to be very happy to receive a contribution of their Safe Home Value Bundle! Thanks EcoSMART!

Howling Howliday Contributor Spotlight - Wellness Pet Food!
The folks at Wellness Pet Food were gracious enough to send eight, count 'em eight, $10 coupons for our 1st thru 3rd place winners.
And we got them in the mail the other day.
Some lucky pups are gonna get some good eats and treats at a pawsome price, I'd say.
Thank you to the folks at Wellness for contributing to Johann's Howling Howliday Giveaway!

Look what the wind blew in!
What did we learn after the big windy, cold stuff that blew through last week? That cold windy stuff can bring some fun toys! Look what blew into our yard? A big ole deflated basketball that Gracie and I are having a super great time with.
An early Christmas present? Could be!!!!

Some Holiday fun!
With all this Howliday Giveaway the past couple of weeks Gracie, Wolfie, Wiggy and I are gettin' in the Holiday spirit!
We like the Holidays so much that last year we made an entire Squidoo Lens dedicated to Christmas for Dogs. Head on over sometime, it's a lot of fun, we call it 'A howliday destination for pups and pup lovers!' You can watch holiday vids, read poems, have a good chuckle over some comics, get some tips on some great homemade and store bought pup gifts, and more. So put your paws back, get a nice cup of hot, and enjoy A Doggie Christmas!
Just to get you started here's one of my favorite holiday dog comics:
Some decorations are going up, and on our walks we see lots of lights around the neighborhood. But no pups get ready for the Holidays like these guys!
And of course, one of my favorite videos to get in the spirit of the Holidays! It's Bailey the Unknown Reindeer!
Happy Howlidays!!!

Howling Howliday Contributor Spotlight - Big Paw Designs!
It's kinda difficult to see in the pic, but way back in 2005 when I was just a wee pup, Mum used to take me to all kinds of doggie events around town...that was before I started competing and gettin' busy with agility, of course. And she loved showing off my very cool collar charm that says 'Rescued'!
And it was about the time that we started JohannTheDog.com! One of the very first companies Mum signed up with as an affiliate was Big Paw Designs. We both loved their pewter collar charms, that have all kind of great sayings...like 'Rescued' and 'Talk to the Tail' and more.
We've been good friends with the folks at Big Paw Designs for quite some time now, so when we asked if they wanted to pawticipate in Johann's Howling Howliday Giveaway, they were one of the first to say yes, and they are donating a super cool $20 gift certificate to one lucky winning pup.
Head on over to their website and check out all the collar charms, pet jewelry, gifts, magnets, bumper stickers, picture frames and more that are designed and made in the USA. And all their bowls, dog & cat toys, catnip, collars and more!
Thanks Big Paw Designs for your great contribution to my Giveaway!

A few photos from our hike yesterday!
Lucky for us the weather was kind of bearable yesterday, so we got in a little five mile hike down at our favorite walking path. Mum made us stay on the path because everywhere else was super muddy. But we didn't mind, we ended up walking just off the path anyway. Mum stayed clean and dry and we got our mud and snow and wet on, BOL!!!
We made a little stop at the stream and it was still kinda frozen, but very beautiful! No need for gswf here :)
We walked 3.5 miles at a pretty brisk clip, which is...'make Mum walk as fast as she can'. Then we took a little break at our favorite stump, and took in the river views.
I was being my impatient self and started chewing on my leash to say, 'let's go!'
We walked on, until we finished the five mile path. Just as we turned the corner Mum snapped this pic and wanted to share , because it reminds her of every winter of Indiana she has ever lived, and that's a lot of 'em you know :)
Got back home, and had a nice dinner with Sweet Potato chews for dessert. Mum cleaned, did laundry, got the dish washer all loaded up and timer set, and then we vegged out and watched a couple of movies. Fun day!
Hope you all had a fun day too!

Howling Howliday Contributor Spotlight - FLOAA Dish-sposables!
Not too long ago the good folks at FLOAA Dish-sposables emailed us to see if we wanted to try out some of their new disposable pet dishes.
Being green we were very intrigued because these eco-friendly pet bowls are made from sugar cane fibers, yep that's right! And they are biodegradable.
Their pet dishes hold 16 ounces each, and the company says that they are easy to travel with and can more efficiently hold water and food. They're also more easily stored in your pantry, car, or other area. Since they're reusable, you can rinse them out after each feeding.
Very interesting! So we asked them if they wanted to donate a couple of bowl packs to Johann's Howling Howliday Giveaway so a couple of winning pups could try them out! They sent them on to us and we got them the other day.
Thanks FLOAA Dish-sposables for contributing to my Giveaway! I can't wait to hear how the pups like 'em!

Howling Howliday Contributor Spotlight - Coryelle Kramer, Animal Communications!
You may remember back in March when my friend Coryelle Kramer, the animal communicator 'talked' to me and took some questions from my reader's pups?
When Coryelle found out that I was putting on Johann's Howling Howliday Giveaway, she jumped at the chance to contribute a gift certificate for a free pet consultation with one lucky winning pup!
Coryelle has been communicating with animals since her childhood. She grew up in the heart of New York City and in the countryside of upstate New York and always had animals around her. Later on in her 20's she embarked on a spiritual journey, inspired by the desire to learn more about her Indian ancestry (both of her father's parents were Native American).
