Do you know what the 'Dog Days of Summer' mean?

It's that time of year, time for the Dog Days of Summer!

But do you know what the Dog Days of Summer are?

We investigated and wanted to share what we learned with you.

The term the 'Dog Days of Summer' has a rich history.

Some believe that 'Dog Days' goes all the way back to Roman times when they referred to it as diēs caniculārēs and associated the hot weather with the star Sirius which they considered the "Dog Star" (as it is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major which means (Large Dog)).

The specific days change from year to year as these days originally were the time of the year when Sirius rose just before or at the same time as the sun. But as time has evolved so does the timing of this occurrence, which is why you will find many conflicting days listed for "The Dog Days of Summer' depending on where you live and which year it is.

Some used to believe that this time was when dogs went mad, and the emanations of Sirius affected dogs in a negative way. Their proof was excessive panting, lethargy and general malaise shown in dogs during this hot time of year made them susceptible to many diseases.

I like to think of them as time to get out there and enjoy Summer and all that Summer has to offer....hiking, swimming, agility, and just enjoying the great outdoors and the long warm days.
