Snow day in Georgia!

If you've been watching the national news, you've probably heard a little about the mess that is Georgia; with the snow and ice we got yesterday.

We live in the mountains about an hour north of Atlanta. And being from the north, we are much more used to this kind of weather and roads than the people that live here are. We know how to prepare for upcoming storms and prepare we did as the weather channels did a great job of letting us know a couple of days ahead that this storm may be a bigger deal than some of the dustings we've gotten this season here in the mountains.

Mum went to the store the day before and stocked up on supplies and food. When she got home, we helped her insulate the water well pump a little more as the temps were going to drop into the single digits again. We filled up tubs of water and the bathtub, boiled some drinking water and stashed that away for all five of us, did the laundry, gathered up additional firewood on the porch and ran the dishwasher.

The snow started at about Noon on Tuesday and continued through the night with a little break in the late afternoon on Tuesday. We ended up getting about 3-4 inches, which is really not that big of a deal if you're from the north, but living in the south is different; they just aren't as equipped to deal with icy/showy roads like the north is. So we knew we may be 'stranded' for a few days.

We watched with wide eyes as all the snow came down yesterday. We woke up to four inches and 4 degrees this morning, which made for a very quick potty trip.

After really low temps a couple of times the two weeks before and a few days without water...Mum did a great job of taking precautions this time. We still have running water, and we are happy to say that our heat, lights and everything else is working great too (knock wood!)!

All the businesses and schools around here are shut down, but lucky us...the mail and trash persons arrived on Tuesday before the snow started. Today we only saw one truck drive by and the mail person didn't make it. We may have one more 'stranded' day and then we should be good to go again.

In the meantime, the snow made for a lot of fun today!!!! We wrestled and zoomed around the cabin...

We took a few breaks and I told Gracie some more herding dog jokes...

Gracie enjoyed some snowball fetch....as I barked and tried to herd her to stop...'Hey you're getting snow in my face!'

She jumped and jumped and jumped....and jumped some more.

And then she finally caught one!!!

I even caught one myself!!!

We wandered around the cabin and checked out how amazing nature can be. We found this cool little stick that had been dripped on from the melting roof snow all day and created itself an ice shell...

Mum had to capture the proverbial snow paw print...good one Mum! Pssstt...that's Grace's print.

We found some dried weeds we have never seen before lying right on top of the pristine snow...hmmm, wonder where that came from?

And the holly trees were gorgeous with snow sitting on top of the holly leaves. BTW, you don't want to step on the dropped holly leaves, ouch!

The cabin looked very much like you'd imagine a mountain cabin in the snow....

And the mountains just look so much more majestic with a few inches...

We don't have pics but Mum cut up a large cardboard box, and Gracie and I took turns sledding a little with Mum!

What a fun day!!! Tomorrow it's going to be warm enough to probably melt all the rest of the snow that didn't melt a little today. We don't get much snow here, so it was fun to have a snow day!!!

  2. What a great time you had! It's good that your mum knows how to get through a snowstorm. I guess the people who live in the south aren't used to it. I wonder if there will be more and more snow now that the climate is shifting.

    The photos are delightful!
