You all know that I'm a black dog. But did you know that many, many times black dogs are the last to be adopted at the shelter?
Well, if my Mum would have passed me up at the shelter because of the color of my fur, it would just have been a tragedy for both of us!
Most people are not aware of how doomed black dogs are when they are brought to a pound because black dogs, particularly black labs or lab mixes, are euthanized at a horrifying rate at many pounds & shelters because people pass them up for lighter colored dogs. If you are thinking about adopting a dog please don't overlook black dogs because they are just as loving & wonderful as lighter colored dogs!
Stop by and check out Black Pearl Dog, it's a great site with lots of information about black dogs, their plight and how you can help.
We also wanted to mention that this cool drawing of me in all my blackness was done by Larry Merrill, when he did his year long project "A Dog Each Day." He's selling a wonderful book now that not only includes me, but all the dogs that he drew for each day of the year in honor of the Year of the Dog.
It is very sad that black dogs get passed up. Chase is also black, and such a good boy. We also adopted a black cat, Phoebe.
ReplyDeleteIt's very strange that. We have not noticed a lot of black dogs at shelters, and funnily the first two we adopted were both black (lab and cross setter/lab). The next was a GSD - there were a LOT of GSDs in the shelter, and a lot of older dogs too.
ReplyDeleteVisiting shelters is always heartbreaking.
